We read the fairy tale, while glowing coals

With pendent stalactites like frozen vines;

Curled upwards into pillars, roses climbed,) K2 K1 h5 T. U) }; [: ]9 s) i
And ramped and were confined, and clustered leaves

A silent murmur, carved in still, gray stone.& _& Q) V& U, V1 P9 w; \1 g; h$ e
High pointed windows pierced the southern wall& v C. G/ o- g! Z
Whence proud escutcheons flung prismatic fires

With pools of red, and quivering green, and blue;- S. D6 L- v6 S$ ^& r" D' B, E
And in the shade beyond the further door,. ?8 O# w* N1 f) N3 I( X h: q; }
Its sober squares of black and white were hid
) K3 t! Y7 E' B- A, c& \9 d Beneath a restless, shuffling, wide-eyed mob

A sudden blare of trumpets, and the throng) u1 i0 V. W0 a
About the entrance parted as the guests

Our eager fancies noted all they brought,
, \( [7 d6 Q# T" m The glorious, unattainable delights!

The fire falls asunder, all is changed,7 u+ H% F3 o% G _4 n# h) |& _; P
I am no more a child, and what I see

The gifts are there, the many pleasant things:9 a; d0 ^1 \/ E0 o* I
Health, wealth, long-settled friendships, with a name

$ n8 k$ \: X, `: i Of making words obedient. This is much;
6 D2 X" R: T$ v, w7 F% ? But overshadowing all is still the curse,
3 R( }: l8 C+ L O# |! w That never shall I be fulfilled by love!
' I) Y3 ~: T+ }3 U Along the parching highroad of the world8 @6 }# \1 \' k0 Q* r; _
No other soul shall bear mine company.
2 c& H, n2 n4 j# P+ f( N Always shall I be teased with semblances,. J9 ]3 N; d5 A; K7 E6 N0 n
With cruel impostures, which I trust awhile1 E K/ i4 r, k" V' p6 I: ^$ Z8 M6 k% q
Then dash to pieces, as a careless boy
0 j* b: [; c0 w9 X2 w2 ] Flings a kaleidoscope, which shattering% @; ~( z( J1 p2 y/ }4 Y2 }
Strews all the ground about with coloured sherds.; }2 b- j. j2 G; J8 d% i
So I behold my visions on the ground) U8 W2 H* b: U D! K
No longer radiant, an ignoble heap# M5 } B* C, D0 ]$ l @
Of broken, dusty glass. And so, unlit,
0 D, Q4 A3 c; n# c5 O Even by hope or faith, my dragging steps
' }1 X9 d! ]8 X3 I0 u. Q Force me forever through the passing days.
